In the latest effort to educate people about the tremendous advantages of combining electric vehicles with solar power, Nissan and leading solar panel company SunPower are teaming up to help electric vehicle owners (well, Nissan LEAF owners) learn how a solar panel system (from SunPower) can help them to both cut CO2 emissions and control their EV charging costs.

The companies are offering some basic online info and a video on how solar power works and how it reduces global warming pollution.

More from Nissan:

“Nissan LEAF owners are conscientious about their energy use, and it makes sense for them to understand how they can offset the power that their all-electric LEAF requires with clean, renewable solar power generated from their own rooftop,” said Brendan Jones, director, Nissan LEAF marketing and sales strategy, NNA. “SunPower is ...

I have to say, I’m more of a Nissan Leaf fan, but it’s nice to see the Chevy Volt is also picking up steam and achieving some sales milestones (including finding more buyers in October than the Leaf).

As long as there are complaints about electric cars, Nissan just isn’t satisfied. Having already resolved the bulky home charger issue with a smaller version, Nissan will next tackle the time it takes to charge an EV.

DC quick chargers can take an EV up to about 80% capacity in just thirty minutes – not bad, when the alternative is charging the car overnight. But thirty minutes is still more time than you might want to spend off the road, or waiting in the morning before heading out to wherever. Nissan’s new technology, if all goes according to projections, will charge an EV battery completely in 10 minutes – less time than it takes to drive to the gas station and fill up.

Kansai University is the hot spot for Nissan – engineers and researchers there have a capacitor electrode made ...

The Japanese automaker, Nissan, has developed a charging system that generates electricity from solar power and stores it in the lithium-ion batteries used in its Leaf electric car. On the roof of its global headquarters in Yokohama, the company has installed 488 solar panels, which generate electricity that is then stored in four Leaf batteries installed in the basement; power from the four batteries is sufficient to power 1,800 Leafs annually. As part of a joint venture with Sumitomo Corp., Nissan aims to refabricate and re-sell the Leaf batteries for power storage as the electric vehicles are traded in or junked in years to come. “These batteries can be useful as back-up power for homes when there’s an outage,” said Takashi Sakagami, head of the joint venture, known as 4R Energy Corp. Other Japanese automakers, including Toyota and Honda, are ...

AeroVironment's Level 3 fast charging, CHAdeMO compliant stations deliver high-power, DC charging for EV drivers with very little time to spare, mirroring the way drivers currently use gasoline stations. (Photo: Business Wire)Oregon is the next state that will distribute electric car charging stations to alleviate some of the crippling range concerns that pure electric cars face when trying to attract mainstream car buyers. The chargers are designed to be “fast-chargers,” which use a 480-volt direct electrical current to charge an electric vehicle fully in around a half hour. NRG Energy recently began deploying fast chargers in Texas as part of its eVgo project between Houston and Dallas — a 250 mile stretch that most pure plug-in electric cars won’t be able to fully traverse without stopping to recharge. Oregon’s new electric car chargers will appear on a 150-mile stretch of highway on Interstate 5 — ...

Less than a fifth of electric car buyers listed the price tag of an electric car as the most important factor when deciding to buy an electric car, according to a new report by management consulting firm Accenture. Most of the concerns for electric car buyers center around how long it takes to charge the car and how far it is able to drive, according to the report. Electric cars are typically limited in how far they are able to drive and they can take a long time to recharge. It can take up to 5 hours for some vehicles to charge completely from a dry battery to a full charge. The Nissan Leaf, one of the cheapest electric cars on the market, can only travel around 100 miles before needing to recharge. Most electric car buyers were concerned about how much money they would ...

The German government has allotted an additional €1 billion ($1.4 billion) in research and development aid for electric cars on top of its existing aid in the form of tax credits and dedicated parking spots to meet its goal of having 1 million electric cars on the road by 2020. That will put Germany in a neck-and-neck race with the United States to deploy as many electric cars as possible. The U.S. government has promoted electric cars stateside by offering tax credits to electric car buyers to bring the price of electric cars down and make them more appealing to mainstream car buyers. The Nissan Leaf, which costs $32,780 before government tax credits, is one of the cheapest electric vehicles but still carries a rather daunting price tag. It will be another A/B test to see which government investment strategy — the one ...

Top Gear, the high-profile car-fanatic show in the United Kingdom known for its high-profile libel lawsuit against Tesla Motors, might have been shooting an episode with another planned electric car outage, according to photos and video taken by a local newspaper. In the latest video, the Top Gear hosts (shown right with a Mitsubishi i electric car) are seen pushing the dry electric cars to a nearby university to find a suitable place to charge them, according to photos taken by local paper The Lincolnite. The last time the team was seen pushing an electric car was when the team claimed the Tesla Roadster had run out of electricity — which led to a high-profile lawsuit from the sporty electric car’s manufacturer Tesla Motors. The latest filming shows the team pushing around a Nissan Leaf and a Mitsubishi i. Top ...

Electric cars are getting blinged out. We’ve written before about how major automakers like Nissan, Ford and GM are plowing forth with electric car and hybrid offerings. Nissan, in particular, wants to grab 20 percent of the global electric cars market. But luxury automakers are getting into the game, too. Could it mean competition for luxury electric car startups like Tesla and Fisker? Big news on this came from BMW recently. First, the company is launching an entire eco-friendly sub-brand of its cars, called “i.” The lineup includes the i3 all-electric city car and the i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. It is also piloting  1,000 ActiveE electrified BMW coupes, testing out a car sharing service and just said it would launch a $100 million venture capital fund to invest in transportation-related services. It has already backed My ...
